A Pox on Both your Houses

As we head into the final stretch for the Democratic and Republican nominees for President there remains drama and controversy as the parties’ choices for candidates have either dropped out or are losing momentum. Both parties are pulling out the stops to prevent Bernie or Donald from capturing the nomination by popular acclaim.

In spite of hundreds of millions spent to advance their inevitable picks, the people have chosen a different direction. Hillary has a real fight on her hands and must count on super delegates to win as the voters pick Bernie again and again; the next few weeks should be interesting to say the least. The Republican Party is in full panic mode fearing Donald could capture the nomination, the lights in the back rooms have been burning all night long for months now after their anointed one, Bush III dropped out of the race. Faced with the choice between Ted and Donald the Republicans are so panicked that they’re rewriting the rules so they can pick an acceptable candidate at their upcoming convention who knows how to toe the line and the Democrats simply can’t believe that Hillary seems to be losing the momentum to Bernie.

What both parties seem to be missing is that the people want change; they want someone who will shake things up and break the inertia that’s plagued congress for far too long. Citizens who’ve never voted before or participated in the political process are coming out in droves. Both parties lament that their anointed ones are failing, and they blame the supporters for both of the outsiders as being ignorant and uniformed with increasing venom. The problem is that supporters of the outsiders are neither ignorant nor uninformed. Bernie, Donald and Ted have drawn “Yuge” crowds wherever they appear. Tens of thousands of voters have turned out repeatedly for Donald, Bernie, and, Ted and according to early primary results, we can expect Election Day turnout in November to surpass the percentages for President Obama in 2008.

More citizens becoming involved in the political process, more citizens attending rallies and sharing their beliefs with friend, neighbors, and families, and more citizens voting on Election Day… What’s not to like about that?

Unfortunately the Democrat and Republican parties don’t like it at all and worse, appear to be deaf to the will of the people. Instead of fairly supporting all candidates, the elites have taken it upon themselves to decide who their party’s nominee will be; after all, the entrenched Washington insiders know better than the uninformed (read: dumb) citizens what’s best for America.

Fortunately for the USA, the people are a lot smarter than either party gives them credit for. The parties, along with most of the media, actually believe that all Americans outside the Beltway or the Big Apple are “sheeple”, and unfortunately many are. There are folks that simply aren’t interested in being part of the solution and are perfectly content to sit on their butts watching mindless programs so they don’t have to think. The good news, however, is that millions and millions of Americans have woken from their self-inflicted stupor and begun the long march towards active participation in our political process. These former sheep have thrown off the mantle of indifference and are standing up and being counted. Their numbers are impressive and give us hope for a more representative government. President Lincoln said it best in his Gettysburg address, “that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

Who will win the nomination for each party and who will be elected the 45th President of the United States remains to be seen, in every race there are winners and losers, but in the end it is the parties themselves that stand lose the most. One can only imagine the party elders sitting in their back rooms making side deals to circumvent the will of the people.  Have they convinced themselves that the newly awakened electorate will soon forget their nefarious attempts to decide amongst themselves who will win and who will lose? I for one believe that we have crossed into new territory where our citizens are not only smarter than the elites believe they are, but they will have a long memory. The motto for the activist group Anonymous is “We do not Forgive, We do not Forget”. While I personally believe in forgiveness, I will not soon forget the underhanded actions by my party.

The Democrat and Republican Party leadership would be well advised to remember that a Pyrrhic victory is no victory at all… You may win this battle by neutralizing the will of the people through underhanded tactics, but you are at risk of losing the war by alienating the new field of voters who may strongly prefer becoming independents rather than affiliate with a party that is out of touch and appears corrupt.

William Shakespeare’s immortal words from Romeo and Juliet about the dysfunction between their two families’ “A Pox on Both Your Houses” seems an apt warning for the Republican and Democratic Party’s, ignore the will of the people and you will suffer the consequences of becoming much more irrelevant than you already are…

As your employer, the U.S. Citizens submit this counseling statement to all individuals seeking election. Overall, employee performance the past decade has been dissatisfactory and requires immediate improvement. This counseling statement will be added to your permanent file and should be consulted frequently if you wish to keep your job. All new applicants should heed these performance requirements.

We have listed nine areas that need immediate improvement and suggest you review the same prior to November 4th, 2014. Your public acknowledgement of deficiencies in job performance is necessary to determine your future employment. Failure to acknowledge this counseling statement may result in your immediate replacement.

Remember why we hired you: You campaigned hard for the position and spent a fortune. We hired you because we believed you were sincere about working to meet the needs of our country, not so you could become rich and famous. Be sure your advertisements include your achievements, we are not interested in how methodically you can tear apart your opponent.

Work Hard: Based on our observations, the country and parts of the world are a real mess. We expect you to focus on solving the country’s challenges, not focusing on partisanship, parties, and perks.

Work within the confines of the U.S. Constitution: The Constitution is not some outdated document to ignore when you wish to advance your agenda. It is the foundation of the Rule of Law in our great land. You took an oath to defend the Constitution against all enemies, both foreign and domestic. We expect you to honor that oath!

Work well with each other: We are sick and tired of the bullying and partisan behavior in Washington. There is much work to be done. We require you to speak civilly with one another. Displaying smirks, sneers or showboating for personal gain or “name recognition” is not helpful and is beneath the dignity of your office. We don’t tolerate this type of behavior with our children and we will not tolerate this behavior from our employees. Find ways to seek consensus on the big issues, and listen twice as much as you speak

Spend more time working and less time trying to get re-elected: We understand that some election cycles occure every two years. Be advised we are sympathetic to your fears of losing your position. We suggest you replace the motto “you can never stop campaigning” with “you can never stop working.” Work hard and communicate well with us and at reelection time and we will gladly return you to office.

Communicate honestly: There are times when you have not been honest and forthright, this is completely unacceptable! We expect you to speak the truth, even when it’s inconvenient or uncomfortable. We are not a nation of liars. Communicate honestly with your constituency and we will honor you for it.

Obey the Law: When we hired you for your position, we did not grant you a license to misbehave or break the law. As your employers, we are compelled to obey the law, we expect you to do so as well. We expect you to follow the letter and the spirit of the law.

Admit you have an addiction to publicity: We recognize that it is very difficult to resist the temptations of fame and power. However, this addiction is simply not acceptable. Pride and arrogance are to be avoided at all times. We do want you to speak out when you have something meaningful to offer.

Do the right thing: We believe if you start each day with a firm resolve to serve the people honestly and to work to the best of your abilities, you will find your job is meaningful and tremendously rewarding. We acknowledge there is strong peer pressure and outright threats to pursue someone else’s agenda. If you resist and do the right thing for America then we will back you up. We respect backbone and integrity. Remember, if everyone stays quiet when great problems arise, small problems can grow quickly and threaten the very wellbeing of our citizens and our great country.

If you take this counseling statement to heart and commit to following these guidelines we will eagerly support you. If you choose to ignore this warning we will give another worthy candidate the opportunity to do better in 2014.

While we hope to work with you for many years to come we must be abundantly clear that your job performance has been unacceptable. As such, we require you make a clear public commitment to these basic job requirements or we will have no choice but to replace you, either now or at your next job review in 2016.
